Transition is represented by both stillness and change. It exists between them. Transition is the moment amid familiarity and newness. A shift is required for anything to grow: the sprout from a seed must emerge from the ground to escape the darkness and reap the life-giving light. Similarly, we must leave the past behind us in order to move forward and gain personal growth. Transition happens through the moments of stillness in our lives that allow reflection; reflection of the time we have endured and of the potential ahead.
Span and Between Spaces articulates the revealed architectural marks of a reclaimed building at its moment of absolute transition. After the house had been stripped down to its skeleton, I highlighted these temporary moments that would soon be gone forever. The work emphasizes the significance of this time in the house’s history by distinctly marking the pivotal moment before the house becomes restored.
